This is my blood (acknowledgement of country and people)

This is a song I put together from fragments of an essay on ‘Aboriginal Spirituality’ – amongst my own words it contains quotes from a few poets, notably Judith Wright, Jack Davis and direct oral sharing from Uncle Max Dulumunmun Harrison. I was born in a black country (Nigeria) and now live in a black country (Australia) where stones bleed slowly and blood speaks fast…

The poet Les Murray has written, ‘Sooner or later I will have to give blood for dancing here’…

This is my blood_?what else can I sing with_this polluted flow is my dreaming_whatever that means…

this denial an ancient death_postponed over and over_until feel of leaf litter and touch of sandstone are forgotten… my ancestors dumb ,grotesque ,aborted ,unheard ,unwaited-upon ,unborn_the strata of the dead burst with the plumes and passions of the Earth… but green places and pure springs are poisoned and laid bare_death is no longer worshipped here_death is no longer worshipped here…

I build and build and build_but will not let life wear away_fearing what is past_I forsake my fragile futures…

death feeds life as life feeds death_needs death_I need to learn to die_back where I begin_take the first and the last breath… join the dancing_learn my stories_like bringing dry wood back to life_singing in the campfire light_bringing dry wood back to life_dancing in the campfire light…

only those will survive who dare to hold their love against the world_only those will rise who touch the depths of life_hold their bare breast to the rocky places ,the burnt places_and hear the ancestors’ cry_the ancestors’ cry…

I wither and you break from me_yet though you dance in living light_I am the Earth_I am the root_I’m the stem that fed the fruit_the link that joins you to the night…

this land is now the birthing place_and the dying place_of me and my people_living and learning together with people who know_whose blood still means what it speaks_the Spirit of this land_Life’s blood_and the blood still flows_the blood still flows…

This is my blood_?what else can I sing with_?this is my blood_?what else can I offer_this is my blood_?what else can pay the price_for stealing this land_?what else can heal this land…

  2. Beautiful Simon. Indeed, the blood still flows… the land still lives – in us, through us, as us… We dance, we sing, and one day we give back the blood we’ve borrowed…
