Welcome! I am beginning a stronger commitment to mindfulness practice.
I am guided therapeutically by Geoff Dawson (psychotherapist and Zen teacher); through the written words and practices of Jon Kabat-Zinn, Thich Nhat Hanh, Pema Chodron, Satish Kumar, Stephanie Dowrick, Robin Grille and Marshall Rosenberg; held with the nurturing love of my wife Meredith, my sons Finn and Quillan and my dear family and friends; and by spirit of place.
I am not new to meditation or mindfulness but I am bringing myself to it anew. And I would like to share my experiences – as like poetry, many people find meditation and mindfulness inaccessible and frustrating at worst and tenuous or fleeting at best. I am confident that I can provide you with a stumbling, pragmatic and poetic perspective on mindfulness practice worthy of your attention and feedback!
‘You have only moments to live,’ writes Jon Kabat-Zinn. I have recently shared with both Geoff and Meredith an underlying anxiety that often frames my perspective on life. As a child, I was taught that when you cross the road you look both ways and then look one more time before crossing. As a teenager, I realised that even after I had looked both ways and looked again, I still felt totally unsure whether a car would come or not while I was crossing… and I crossed anyway, most of the time.
Knowing the rules of communication is not the same as knowing someone.
Through this mindful journey I wish to orient myself more strongly with a locus of love, to connect more sustainably with ‘a coherent source of energy for living, for problem solving, and for healing’ (JKZ).
Thank you for bearing witness with me to the germination of this ‘seedmind!’
At this time I have begun, and am intending to continue, at least 45 minutes of structured practice each day (for at least 8 weeks), as well as spontaneous practice integrated with my daily interactions. I am choosing this relatively intensive approach to ride the waves that are currently pounding on my shore. ‘You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.’ (JKZ) My ultimate aim is to increase and strengthen the natural integration of mindfulness into all areas of my life and relationships. For anyone reading this who is new to mindfulness practice I suggest committing to 15 minutes maximum of structured practice each day (regular is best!) and reading authors like Jon Kabat-Zinn, Thich Nhat Hanh and Pema Chodron (I am not intending to present a thorough manual in this blog). As I am using this blog to document a specific journey, there will be some sense of continuation and development. At the same time, I will return to explore some areas more fully as I go and probably also make some deviations. Enjoy!
